This upcoming moon is called the Flower Moon or the Corn Planting Moon. It is a super moon and is it at its fullest on Friday, May 7th at 6:45 a.m. MST. I tuned in for some guidance as to what else you can do during this full moon to continue honoring spring and renewal. This particular moon represents the direction of the east, which recalls the rising sun and asks you to focus on what is new in your life. Because of this, I recommend that in honor of the moon, you write out things that you wish to let go of such as any situation you wish to clear from your mind in order to bring in something new…jobs, relationships, etc.
After you have written out those things that you wish to let go of, I recommend a quiet burning ceremony and then save the ashes. Put them in with a marigold plant that you are either planting in a spring bed outside or that you have in a pot inside. The positive attributes of marigold—aside from being nice to look at—are passion and creativity, which are connected to the second chakra.
The stone associated with this moon is moss agate. This is a shamanic stone. The recommendation is to do a drumming journey to facilitate a clearer link to the mineral and plant kingdoms. Stay tuned because in the coming weeks we will be outlining how to do a drumming journey. The medicine totem that corresponds to this moon is Squirrel, so I recommend leaving out an offering for the squirrels.
If you’re unfamiliar with the squirrel totem, here is a little more about it:
The gathering power of Squirrel medicine is a great gift. It teaches you how to gather and store your energy for times of need. It teaches you to reserve something for future use, whether it be a judgment, an opinion, a savings account, candles, or extra food. To put it in a nutshell (forgive the pun), Squirrel is the Boy Scout of the animal kingdom—always prepared. In today’s world of changing times and fortunes, it is the wise person who prepares for the future. Squirrel is a friendly medicine to have, in light of possible future rainy days. Its message is to be prepared, but not to go nuts with it. Love yourself enough to gather the goods that will meet your needs in times of scarcity, even if that time never comes.
Squirrel medicine can manifest in your life in many different ways. It may tell you to honor your future by readying yourself for change. The message could be to lighten your load if you have gathered too many “things” that do not serve you. These “things” can include thoughts, worries, pressures, stresses, or gadgets that have been broken for years. In understanding the balance involved in gathering, you need to look at the idea of circulating the stock of what you have gathered. Look for opportunities to donate any gently used, working items that no longer serve you. If something has stopped “growing corn” for you, then it is time to let it go.
Squirrel has another lesson which can aid you if you observe what is obvious, and which can prepare you for anything. It has to do with the safe place in which to put the things, intentions, and energies you’ve gathered. This safe place is an untroubled heart and mind, and that which is gathered to put in this place is wisdom and caring. The energies gathered will set your mind and heart free, so that you will know that all will be taken care of in its own time. Apply this to your fears about the future, and they will vanish.
Harnessing the energies of the squirrel totem, of the moss agate, and of the marigold during this supermoon and embarking on a drumming journey during its ensuing phases can help lend a hand in re-centering yourself and preparing yourself for the coming gifts that the future will bring.
